Okay, I am a little off the subject of married men, but let me follow that through to the connection. Let's look at a wife. The majority of wives work these days, they also are the primary childcare provider, and most of them do most of the housework and laundry and cooking and shopping as well. They are also expected by their husbands to be sexy and ready for a quickie at the drop of his pants. Women do all that because they put these standards on themselves. They still expect that they must do more and do it better because they are women. So where does a woman cut back? Usually it is in paying attention to her husband's primary needs. A man needs sex and most married men will tell you that the amount of sex that they get dwindles after marriage and especially after children. In addition, the amount of time that a woman has to devote to the nurturing, acceptance, approval and attention to her husband decreases proportionately with the addition of children, job responsibilities and a bigger house.

So that leads us to the plight of the married man.

Who is the married man? First of all he is a man. Men are results oriented. Men have a lot of testosterone. They aren't good at deciphering what women want, especially their own wives.The married man used to run his own life. He came and went as he pleased; he watched or played baseball whenever he wanted. He lived his own lifestyle. He could have his woman withhim whenever hewanted and she would pay all of her attention to him. Now he is marriedwith a couple of kids, a mortgage, a job he has because it pays themost, not because he loves it so much and a wife who used to cater to him exclusively who now has to divide her time between him, the kids, the house and usually her job. He will be more charming, loving, attentive and wonderful than a woman can imagine that any man can be. So what happens next is that woman who finally surrenders to her feelings for that man, asks him to leave his wife for her. The response from him will almost inevitably be one of two, but I'm married and I'll neverleave my wife or yes, I'll leave my wife, but not however (she's not ready,my children are as well young, I can't afford it however, my mother won't approve etc.) Initially the woman will respond with anger. "If you love your wife what are you doing with me?" Here is the clincher that finally hooks the woman, he is committed to his wife and the woman buys into his honorable dedication to his wife and thinks if only I could have a man who loves me like that.

It is at that point in their relationship that the woman's final act of settling may occur.

Either she will end it and go off to nurse her broken heart, wondering how he could have been so wonderful and such a heel atthe same time, or she will continue the affair and settle forbeing the other woman in his life. Either way the woman is damaged. The man will go back to his wife who was either completely unaware of the romantic drama or who also chooses to settle by living in denial of his infidelity. Then life goes on.

It is impossible to ever have that kind of trust if you enter a relationship that originated with anyone cheating.

Many times in past articles and seminars I have stressed the poor validity of the unstructured interview in the selection process. however the unstructured interview is still the most common selection as welll. Apart from being poor predictors of work performance, interviews are also the most underrated expense item of the selection process.

The Illusions Of Easiness

There is a belief that interviewing is all about talking to people, and interviewing is just about good conversation. The selection interview is much more than a conversation, and good conversationalists aren't necessarily good interviewers.

2. Clearly defined performance expectations needed to perform the job successfully (Build a Competency Model).
3. Ask questions that project of the candidate's ability to meet performance standards (Behaviourally based on each of the above competencies).
4. Decide on the answers you want before you ask the questions.
5. Conduct the interview in a manner that maximises an effective communication and accurate measurement (Use more than one interviewer, take notes and rate answers).
6. Use behavioural decision-making to predict the candidate's performance on the job.

Interviewing is not simple. It is time consuming and tiring, but still an important part of the selection process. Very few managers have been trained and usually conduct an interview as they have been interviewed - poorly. The keys to better interviewing include:

1. Ensure all questions are behaviourally, or situational based - "Tell me about a time..." or "Give me an example of..."
2. All candidates get the same questions.
3. Questions must be aligned to the core job competencies.
4. About 8 questions and associated probes will usually suffice (for a one hour interview).
5. Always have two or more interviewers and take notes.
6. Never conduct interviews back-to-back.
7. Design a rating sheet and "score" the interview immediately the candidate leaves.

Long sessions (over 3 hours) tend to be less productive for two reasons: Heavy workloads keep participants from being totally focused as they are worried about whats happening back at their desks and the brain will absorb what the butt will endure. Coaching is another way to work with your learning schedule. Research suggests that every dollar invested in coaching yields a minimum return of $2 to $10.

Tip Seven: Assess your current leadership development curriculum to determine where the emphasis is or is not. Many excellent curriculums spend a significant amount of time on knowledge and skills while ignoring the attitudes and habits. However when looking at leadership and performance failures, is it a Wonderful Christmas Time of a lack of knowledge or skills or a question of poor attitudes and poor habits? To build inspirational leadership begins by developing inspirational attitudes that are internalized by everyone within the culture.

Tip Eight: Determine if your curriculum is a core competency based or results based. Core competencies present a challenge because whose core competencies are they? If you understand your desired results, then by selecting a curriculum that helps you achieve your specific desired results is more likely to move you closer to achieving those results.

Tip Nine: Within your learning engagements, is the desired end result to improve weaknesses or to build strengths? Winning teams win because of their strengths not their weaknesses. A strength-based approach also helps to build emotional intelligence (EQ).

Tip Ten: Finally, ensure that all participants have the tools necessary to own their own self-leadership development. Many organizations share the challenge of implementing change or operationalizing new initiatives. By providing participants with proven tools, such as a Goal Achievement Plan, helps them to take action in a structured and aligned manner thereby achieving the organizational goals. When everyone employs the same tools, waste is reduced. The desired end results are achieved quicker with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

These 10 tips are neither simple nor easy. However, to truly create a cultural of exceptional and inspirational leadership requires significant planning.
